Wine Description for Riesling Pettenthal GG 2023 by Kühling-Gillot

Character
The Pettenthal ranks among the historic monopoly vineyard sites of Rheinhessen Riesling production and yields wines of extraordinary precision year after year. Kühling-Gillot, one of the leading estates in Bodenheim, vinifies this site with uncompromising rigour. The designation GG (Großes Gewächs) stands for dry top-quality wines according to the strict guidelines of the VDP. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol content, this 2023 presents itself as a classically elegant representative of its kind – fine-nerved, mineral-driven and with that tension that distinguishes great Rieslings.
Terroir & Origin
The Pettenthal lies in an exposed south-westerly position directly on the Rhine and is regarded as one of Rheinhessen’s finest vineyard sites. The soils consist of red Rotliegendes – weathered sandstone and clay slate – which impart a characteristic spiciness and minerality to the Riesling. Proximity to the river creates a balanced microclimate with moderating temperatures. This geological peculiarity fundamentally shapes the wine: the red soils provide structure and depth, whilst the hillside location guarantees optimal sun exposure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds ideal conditions in the Pettenthal and develops its full complexity here. Kühling-Gillot works according to biodynamic principles and allows the old vines time to mature. Maturation takes place traditionally in stainless steel tank or large wooden cask to avoid masking the fruit clarity and terroir expression. The wines are vinified dry, with precise acidity structure that promises longevity. The 2023 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season with cool nights that preserved freshness and aromatics.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this calibre demands sophisticated accompaniment: scallops, turbot with herb butter or pan-fried char harmonise perfectly with the minerality and freshness. This Riesling also proves a versatile companion to asparagus with hollandaise sauce, goat’s cheese or Asian dishes with moderate spice. The acidity structure makes it an ideal partner for rich fish dishes.
