Wine description for Riesling Marienburg Grosses Gewächs „Falkenlay“ 2023 by Clemens Busch

Character
The Falkenlay ranks among the legendary vineyard sites of Marienburg and represents Clemens Busch’s uncompromising vision of dry Mosel Riesling. This Grosses Gewächs embodies crystalline precision and mineral depth, far removed from any concession to accessibility. Busch’s biodynamic philosophy manifests itself in the unvarnished authenticity of this wine, which demands patience and understanding – and rewards both generously.
Terroir & Origin
The Falkenlay rises above the Mosel village of Pünderich on steep Devonian slate with a south-westerly aspect. This cooler exposure lends the wines their characteristic tension and elegance. The grey slate stores warmth, whilst the steep slope ensures optimal drainage. Clemens Busch has farmed these parcels biodynamically for decades, resulting in deep-rooted vines and a vibrant soil structure. The result: wines of extraordinary ageing potential and terroir expression.
Grape variety & Vinification
Riesling perhaps shows its purest expression on the Mosel. Busch vinifies with minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, extended maturation on fine lees in traditional Fuder (large old wooden casks), no fining or filtration whatsoever. The 2023 vintage, following a challenging summer, produced precise, cool wines with taut acidity structure. The near-dry style (■□□□□) underscores Busch’s philosophy that great Mosel Rieslings derive their sweetness from fruit concentration, not residual sugar.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine demands dishes of corresponding substance: scallops with cauliflower purée, turbot in beurre blanc or calf’s sweetbread with morels. Equally, aged alpine cheese or goat’s cheese with honey harmonise beautifully. The wine’s saline minerality complements Asian cuisine – such as dim sum or Vietnamese summer rolls – in a fascinating manner.
