Wine description for Riesling Hallgartener Hendelberg 1G Erste Lage 2023 by Peter Jakob Kühn

Character
Peter Jakob Kühn is among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the Rheingau. His Riesling from the Hallgartener Hendelberg embodies that mineral precision and vibrant freshness which distinguish the Erste Lagen of the Rheingau. The wine presents itself with a moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol. and dry style – a purist terroir wine that favours elegance over opulence. The 2023 vintage brought wines of taut structure and invigorating acidity following a challenging summer.
Terroir & Origin
The Hallgartener Hendelberg lies in the higher elevations of the central Rheingau and benefits from deep loess-loam soils over Taunus quartzite. This geological constellation imparts the wines their characteristic tension between fruit and minerality. The south-westerly exposure guarantees optimal sun exposure, whilst cooling winds from the Taunus provide the necessary freshness and finesse. Kühn’s biodynamic management with hand harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar allows the vineyard site character to express itself unadulterated.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds its classical home in the Rheingau. Kühn vinifies according to biodynamic principles with spontaneous fermentation and extended lees ageing in traditional large wooden casks. The avoidance of fining and minimal filtration preserve the authentic texture and vitality of the wine. The dry orientation underscores Kühn’s philosophy of creating wines that place origin before technique – Riesling as a transparent ambassador of its provenance.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The taut acidity and mineral structure make this Riesling an ideal companion for oysters, scallops or sushi. It equally harmonises with pan-fried char, pike-perch in butter sauce or asparagus with hollandaise sauce. The freshness cuts through rich textures, whilst the subtle fruit also pairs well with goat’s cheese or lightly aged Comté.
