Wine Description for Jagini Zagersdorf 2017 by Moric

Character
Roland Velich, the man behind Moric, has devoted himself to Blaufränkisch with a dedication that recalls Burgundian Pinot Noir philosophy. The Jagini from Zagersdorf embodies his approach of reduction and precision: cool elegance rather than opulent power, mineral tension instead of fruit bomb. At 13.5% alcohol, this wine demonstrates restraint as a strength – a deliberate rejection of the overripeness that sometimes dominates elsewhere on Lake Neusiedl.
Terroir & Origin
Zagersdorf lies at the Leithagebirge, where calcareous soils meet the Pannonian climate. This geological particularity fundamentally shapes the character of the Blaufränkisch: the limestone imparts structure and minerality, whilst warm days and cool nights provide aromatic complexity. Velich cultivates old vines here, whose deep roots unlock the limestone terroirs – a foundation for wines with depth and ageing potential. The 2017 vintage was characterised by warmth in Burgenland, yet precisely in this vineyard site the Blaufränkisch preserves its characteristic freshness and tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Blaufränkisch is the autochthonous noble variety of Burgenland, a grape with enormous potential for age-worthy, complex red wines. Velich’s approach is characterised by minimalist intervention: spontaneous fermentation, extended skin contact for structure without harshness, maturation in large wooden casks that allow the wine to breathe without dominating it with oak aromas. The result is wines that place terroir above technique – translucent, vibrant, with that silky texture that distinguishes great Blaufränkisch.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine for thoughtful cuisine: venison loin with lingonberries, braised ox cheeks or wild duck with red cabbage harmonise with its structure. Equally aged mountain cheese, beef fillet with mushrooms or the Austrian classic: boiled beef with root vegetables. The mineral freshness also makes it an ideal companion for lamb ragout or duck breast with cherry sauce.
