Wine Description for Clos du Bourg sec 2023 by Huet

Colour & Appearance
Intense straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a Chenin Blanc that already hints at its ripeness and concentration visually.
Nose
Wonderfully expressive and more complex than the lighter 2022: ripe quince, kumquat and pecan nuts meet blossom honey and warm, lightly buttered brioche. The nose displays a fascinating balance between fruit ripeness and subtle yeastiness.
Palate
Here the true class reveals itself: precise and crystal-clear with impressive pressure and tension, yet surprisingly sensual and juicy. The elegant, fresh acidity carries quinces, pears and yellow plums, counterpointed by tart cider, fine Earl Grey notes and mineral stone. The delicate texture and underlying energy lend this powerful Chenin Blanc a dancing lightness – a paradoxical pleasure.
Finish
Long, mineral and sustained by persistent freshness. The acidity remains lively whilst the fruit aromas fade elegantly.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos du Bourg ranks among France’s oldest Grand Cru parcels (first mentioned in the 7th century) and sits above Vouvray’s church. The six hectares within the historic stone walls benefit from flat clay soil with flint and chalk inclusions on typical Touraine tuffeau limestone. Roots reach the tuffeau after just one metre – ideal conditions for mineral Chenin Blanc.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Chenin Blanc from a challenging vintage: the cherry vinegar fly necessitated rigorous quality management – every berry was individually assessed, 25% of the harvest discarded. Multiple harvest passes, meticulous selection, spontaneous fermentation and maturation in used demi-muids. Malolactic fermentation only in selected barrels.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Scallops with butter and herbs, turbot in cream sauce, sweetbreads, poultry terrine, aged Comté or Beaufort, but also sushi and sashimi. The acidity structure also suits richer preparations.
Special Features
Despite challenging 2023 conditions, a great wine has emerged – proof of Huet’s uncompromising quality philosophy and the extraordinary terroir of Clos du Bourg.
