Wine Description for Herxheimer Honigsack Spätburgunder IG 2024 from Odinstal

Character
Odinstal winery presents with this Spätburgunder from the vineyard site Herxheimer Honigsack an accessible, light-footed red wine that embodies the cooler style of modern German Pinot Noirs. With moderate 12.5% alcohol and dry orientation, this wine demonstrates elegance over power – a deliberate choice that reflects the spirit of the times and places drinking pleasure at the forefront.
Terroir & Origin
The Palatinate has developed into one of Germany’s most exciting wine regions for Spätburgunder over the past decades. Herxheim lies in the northern Palatinate, where soils are characterised by loam and loess – structures that can lend both substance and finesse to Spätburgunder. The name „Honigsack“ alludes to historically prized vineyard sites that have been cultivated for centuries. The region’s temperate climate with sufficient warmth for ripeness but without southern heaviness enables wines with vibrant acidity and clear fruit.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spätburgunder, known internationally as Pinot Noir, is Germany’s most demanding red grape variety and demands the highest attention from the winemaker. The classification as IG (Indication Géographique) signals an unpretentious vineyard wine that nonetheless carries clear regional provenance. The vintage 2024 is still young but should already display typical characteristics with moderate winemaking: red berry fruit, subtle spice and that silky texture that distinguishes fine Spätburgunder. The low alcohol content speaks to early harvesting and gentle processing.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile companion for lighter cuisine: roasted poultry, duck breast roasted medium-rare, veal schnitzel or mushroom dishes harmonise beautifully. Also an interesting pairing with aged soft cheese such as Camembert or with salmon. The moderate structure makes it the ideal terrace wine for balmy summer evenings.
