Wine Description for Mussbacher Eselshaut Spätburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2022 by Christmann

Character
Weingut Christmann is among the top producers of the Palatinate and has established an international reputation over recent decades, particularly with its Rieslings. Yet the family demonstrates with this Spätburgunder from the VDP Erste Lage Eselshaut that they also work with Pinot Noir at the highest level. The 2022 vintage presents itself with the precision and elegance typical of Christmann, whilst the moderate alcohol content of 13% points to a wine that prioritises finesse over power – entirely in keeping with a modern, Burgundy-inspired style.
Terroir & Origin
The Eselshaut in Mußbach is one of the most renowned vineyard sites in the Palatinate. The name presumably derives from the difficulty of working the soil – as laborious as tanning a donkey’s hide. The vineyard benefits from calcareous soils with marl and clay components, which lend the Spätburgunder structure and minerality. The mild climate of the Palatinate with its sheltered position at the Haardt enables a long, even ripening that gives Pinot Noir the necessary complexity without losing freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spätburgunder, the German expression of Pinot Noir, is one of the most demanding grape varieties. At Christmann, it is cultivated according to biodynamic principles and a minimalist intervention approach. The family relies on natural yeasts, gentle extraction and an ageing regimen that allows the terroir to express itself. One can expect a wine that combines Burgundian elegance with Palatinate fruit clarity – cool, precise, with fine tannin structure.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Spätburgunder harmonises beautifully with roasted duck, venison loin with mushrooms or braised calf’s sweetbread. It also shows its class with aged soft cheeses such as Époisses or mushroom dishes with truffle. The wine’s elegance pairs equally well with tuna steak or salmon in red wine sauce.
