Wine Description for Saint-Romain blanc „Perrière“ AOC 2022 by Henri & Gilles Buisson
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a classic appearance for a young Burgundy wine from a higher altitude vineyard site.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly reductive, but in an elegant way: A subtle smokiness plays around white-fleshed fruits such as pear and greengage. These are joined by pineapple and lime, whilst mineral notes and petrichor – that scent of wet stones – recall the chalky terroir. A hint of pastry rounds out the aromatic profile.
- Palate
- Juicy and straightforward with perceptible yet well-integrated oak spice. Green and yellow pears dominate, accompanied by citrus peel and pineapple. The yeast autolysis aromas lend the wine a creamy texture that contrasts strikingly with its vibrant freshness. A straightforward Chardonnay with substance and drinkability – typical of the higher altitude vineyard sites of Saint-Romain.
- Finish
- Medium length with persistent freshness and mineral aftertaste. The acidity remains present without being dominant.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Perrière lies at 320-350 metres altitude east of Saint-Romain. The name already reveals its distinctive character: limestone (Colluviol sur Calcaire) defines the terroir and gives the wine its mineral precision. The 40-year-old vines benefit from the altitude and east-facing exposure.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressing. Spontaneous fermentation in wood, malolactic fermentation spontaneously in barrel. Maturation over 10-12 months in a thoughtfully composed blend of barriques (228-500 litres), concrete eggs and WineGlobes – only 10% new wood. Bentonite fining, coarse filtration. Biodyvin-certified. Minimal sulphur use (40-50 mg/l).
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Excellent with saag paneer with coconut milk and cardamom, honey-glazed mushrooms with udon and broccoli or Moroccan lemon chicken with fennel.
- Special Features
- An authentic representative of the underrated Saint-Romain appellation. Frédéric Buisson works with minimal intervention and allows the wine time to develop – daily tasting rather than recipe.
