Wine Description for Der Keil DOC 2024 by Manincor

Character
An authentic South Tyrolean Vernatsch from the house of Manincor, which impressively embodies the renaissance of this often underestimated grape variety. With moderate 12.5% alcohol and a dry orientation, this wine presents itself as a light-footed, highly drinkable companion that places elegance above power – a welcome countermovement to the international heaviness of many modern red wines.
Terroir & Origin
Manincor manages some of the finest vineyard sites for Vernatsch in South Tyrol at Lake Caldaro. The vineyards benefit from the mild, Mediterranean microclimate of the lake whilst also enjoying cooling alpine influences – ideal conditions for a grape variety that requires freshness and finesse. The name „Der Keil“ refers to the characteristic parcel location. The winery is counted among the biodynamic pioneers of the region and combines traditional South Tyrolean winemaking craft with uncompromising quality philosophy.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Vernatsch (also called Schiava) is the historic leading variety of South Tyrol, long misunderstood as a simple quaffing wine. In the hands of ambitious winemakers like Manincor, however, the grape variety reveals its true potential: delicate fruit, silky-fine tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable drinkability. Vinification is conducted respectfully and with restraint, so as not to obscure the natural elegance of the variety. The 2024 vintage promises youthful freshness and the characteristic lightness that makes Vernatsch the ideal everyday wine – provided one doesn’t confuse quality with alcohol content.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A classic companion to South Tyrolean Jause with speck, cured sausages and alpine cheese. Excellent with pasta with mushrooms, veal schnitzel or grilled fish. The moderate structure makes it also the perfect partner for Asian cuisine or vegetarian dishes. Served lightly chilled, it is the ideal terrace wine for warm summer evenings.
