Wine description for Cuvée Romanissa VdF rouge 2024 by Matassa

Character
Tom Lubbe of Domaine Matassa is one of the pioneers of the natural wine movement in Roussillon. His Cuvée Romanissa embodies a radically purist philosophy: at just 11% alcohol, this Grenache presents itself as a light-footed, eminently drinkable interpretation that deliberately works against the trend towards power and concentration. Here it’s about freshness, juiciness and vibrancy – wine that invites you to drink it, not to analyse it.
Terroir & Origin
Roussillon on the French-Spanish border is actually known for powerful, sun-kissed wines. Matassa’s vineyards lie in the Aspres hills near Calce, where slate and granite soils provide mineral freshness. Lubbe works here with old vines and early harvesting to preserve natural acidity and moderate alcohol levels despite the Mediterranean climate. The classification as Vin de France allows him maximum freedom beyond AOC regulations.
Grape variety & Vinification
Grenache shows its elegant side here: not the jammy opulence of overripe grapes, but red fruit, herbal spice and stony minerality. Lubbe works strictly biodynamically, eschews sulphur additions during vinification and relies on spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts. The wines are bottled unfiltered and unrefined. The result is a wine of unvarnished authenticity that bears the signature of the vintage and the place.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This light, vibrant Grenache is a versatile food companion. Perfect with grilled vegetables, ratatouille or tapenade. The moderate structure harmonises beautifully with charcuterie, terrine or pâté. Also an excellent choice with pizza, pasta with tomato sauce or Mediterranean stews. The wine’s freshness makes it an ideal partner for Moroccan tagine or Spanish tapas. Served lightly chilled, it reveals its full drinking pleasure.
