Wine Description for Corinto IGP 2018 from Tenuta di Castellaro

Colour & Appearance
Muted ruby red with vibrant violet reflections – a wine that reveals its youthfulness and freshness already in the glass.
Nose
Fascinatingly multi-layered: sour cherries and blueberries meet violets and an aromatic bouquet of Mediterranean herbs – rosemary, thyme, juniper. A fine peppery note underpins the whole. This fragrance charmingly shifts between cool elegance and southern warmth.
Palate
Refreshing and fruit-driven, the aromatic interplay continues on the palate. Soft tannins and a lively acidity give the wine structure without weighing it down. Particularly characteristic: a fine saline minerality that animates the tongue. The spicy notes provide complexity, whilst the quaffable drinking flow tempts you to the next sip.
Finish
Medium length, with persistent freshness and a saline minerality that enlivens the palate and never cloys – a wine that invites further exploration and contemplation.
Terroir & Origin
The vines thrive on the Aeolian Islands at 350 metres altitude on volcanic and sandy soil. This unique combination of elevation, Mediterranean climate and mineral-rich subsoil shapes the characteristic style of this Sicilian wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The rare variety Corinthiaki (here called Corinto), originating from Greece, is destemmed and fermented for ten days in French barriques with multiple punch-downs of the cap. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 500-litre casks. After one year of maturation, the wine is bottled unfiltered and unrefined – an authentic expression of grape variety and terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Ideal with grilled sea bream with anchovies, cherry tomatoes and olives, sun-dried tomatoes with Grana Padano, Mediterranean vegetable dishes or also with pasta with sardines and fennel. The saline minerality harmonises perfectly with seafood and olive oil-based dishes.
Special Features
A fascinating wine from a rare Greek grape variety that combines Sicilian terroir with Hellenic winemaking tradition. Invigorating, seductive and never boring – an authentic expression of volcanic minerality.
