Wine Description for Corinto IGP 2018 by Tenuta di Castellaro
- Colour & Appearance
- Muted ruby red with lively violet reflections – a wine that already tells of energy and character in the glass.
- Nose
- Seductive and multifaceted: sour cherry and blueberry meet the cool elegance of violet and the Mediterranean fire of rosemary, thyme and juniper. A subtle pepper note adds depth to the whole. The bouquet shifts charmingly between alpine freshness and southern warmth – Sicily rarely smells so alive.
- Palate
- Just as invigorating as the nose promises: juicy fruit, soft tannins and an exciting spice create a quaffable, never tiring drinking experience. What truly sets this wine apart, however, is its fine saline vein – an unmistakable sign of volcanic origin – that runs animatingly across the tongue and awakens the thirst for the next sip.
- Finish
- Medium length, fresh and carried by invigorating acidity. Not a gram of excess – the wine bids farewell as elegantly as it began.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines grow at 350 metres altitude on the island of Lipari in the Aeolian Islands, on a mixture of volcanic and sandy soil. This extraordinary terroir shapes the wine with its characteristic minerality and salinity.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- A blend of the Greek-origin rarity Korinthiaki (Corinto) and Nero d’Avola. The destemmed grapes are fermented for ten days in French barriques, with the grape cap punched down several times. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 500-litre casks; after one year of maturation, the wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined – artisanal integrity in its purest form.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with dried tomatoes with Grana Padano and olives or with grilled sea bream with anchovies, cherry tomatoes, herbs and olive oil. The wine’s saline minerality makes it the perfect companion to Mediterranean cuisine.
- Special Features
- A true outsider in the best sense: the grape variety Korinthiaki is rarely found outside Greece. In combination with the volcanic terroir of the Aeolian Islands, this creates a distinctive wine with its own character – not a style wine, but an expression of a place.
