Wine Description for Corinto IGT 2019 by Tenuta di Castellaro
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous cherry red with a pale rim – a colour that evokes Burgundian elegance rather than Sicilian power.
- Nose
- Surprisingly cool and multi-layered. Initially dark berries – plums, blackberries, cassis – then a fascinating spice layer of black pepper, graphite and fine leather. The roasted aromas of coffee and dark chocolate reveal themselves with remarkable finesse, almost Bordeaux-like in their complexity. A nose that continues to reveal new facets.
- Palate
- Here any association with Bordeaux disappears – and that is what is fascinating. The Corinto lives from grip and structure, racy yet possessed of striking elegance. The mouthfeel is silky and caressing, yet with enormous pressure that recalls great Pinot Noir. But the southern climate is present: all the senses are activated, the wine literally makes you crave more. Cinnamon, clove, star anise dominate the spice palette.
- Finish
- Remarkably persistent. Coffee cream, dark chocolate and cocoa butter propel the finale forward again and again – a finish that seems never to end whilst remaining consistently elegant.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines grow at 350 metres altitude on the Aeolian Islands off Sicily. The volcanic and sandy soil gives the wine its characteristic minerality and cool elegance despite its southern provenance.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- The rare Corinthianki, originating from Greece, is destemmed and fermented for ten days in French barriques, with multiple punch-downs of the cap. Malolactic fermentation in 500-litre casks, then one year of maturation. Bottled unfiltered and unrefined – pure authenticity.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Braised lamb shoulder with oriental jus, grilled veal cutlet with Café de Paris butter or roasted onions with anchovies and green olives – the wine demands robust, spiced flavours.
- Special Characteristics
- A wine that transcends geographical boundaries: Sicilian terroir meets Burgundian elegance. The rare Corinthianki grape variety reveals its extraordinary potential here.
