Hardly any other winery in the region can look back on such a tradition as Clos des Papes. The Avril family, active in viticulture since 1600, is one of the founders of the appellation and has played a key role in shaping the statutes of Chateauneuf du Pape. Earlier generations supplied the Élysée Palace with their wines. The first wine to leave the winery under the name Clos des Papes dates back to 1896! Paul Vincent Avril describes himself as a modern traditionalist. Before he took over the winery, he gained experience at renowned wineries in Bordeaux and Burgundy. He now relies almost entirely on large foudres for vinification to minimise the influence of wood. No wood is used at all for white wines. The average yields are extremely low. In 2013 and 2014, it was less than 15 hl/ha.
