Wine Description for Clos de la Cure AOC 2023 from Château de Coulaine

Character
The Clos de la Cure from Château de Coulaine embodies the classic elegance of Loire Chenin. This vineyard site produces wines year after year that balance between mineral precision and vibrant fruit – typical of the finest expressions of this often underestimated grape variety. The 2023 vintage benefits from a well-balanced growing cycle, which allowed the Chenin Blanc to develop its characteristic acidity structure whilst achieving full ripeness.
Terroir & Origin
Château de Coulaine has managed vineyards in the Chinon Appellation for generations, which, whilst primarily known for Cabernet Franc, also harbours excellent white wine sites on tuffeau and limestone soils. This geological foundation gives the Chenin wines their distinctive mineral tension. Proximity to the Loire ensures a temperate climate with cool nights, which preserve the grape variety’s typical freshness and aromatic precision.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chenin Blanc is the great white grape variety of the Loire – versatile, long-lived and terroir-expressive. In dry expression, it displays notes of green apple, pear, quince and honeydew melon, underpinned by a characteristic waxy texture and herbal spice. Château de Coulaine practises a respectful, artisanal approach, which allows the wine to authentically reflect its region of origin. The moderate alcohol content of 13% Vol. underscores the philosophy of finesse over power.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The acidity structure and minerality make this Chenin an ideal companion for river fish such as pike-perch or pike, classically prepared with beurre blanc. It also harmonises beautifully with Loire goat’s cheese, such as Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, or with poultry terrine. The wine’s freshness also pairs well with richer preparations such as scallops or veal fricassée.
