Wine description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru blanc Clos Saint-Jean AOC 2023 by Thomas Morey
- Colour & Appearance
- Intense straw yellow with vibrant green reflections – a wine that radiates energy and youth.
- Nose
- Thomas Morey’s Clos Saint-Jean 2023 presents itself as the most dynamic wine of the vintage. An elegant, fleeting reduction quickly gives way to a seductive aromatic bouquet: citrus notes, pineapple, the green freshness of carambola and greengage, along with apple at perfect ripeness. A hint of finest oak and a delicate vanilla powder complete the picture – inviting, precise, full of promise.
- Palate
- On the palate, this Premier Cru unfolds its full class: juicy, with finest fruit and impressive tension. The wine possesses depth and a seductive ripeness, yet remains clearly structured and powerful. The present acidity gives the wine backbone and muscle – it is more assertive than its siblings, displaying presence and self-confidence. The long finish underscores its class.
- Finish
- Long, powerful and carried by vibrant freshness. The acidity carries far, the fruit remains present – a finish that makes you eager for the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Clos Saint-Jean is a historic climat whose origins date back to 589, when nuns from the Saint-Jean le Grand monastery in Autun planted vines here. Morey’s white Clos Saint-Jean comes from small parcels with white soils in Les Rébiches – a terroir that favours elegance and minerality. The vines are partly young (planted in 2017), partly over 60 years old.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Chardonnay pure, vinified with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously, the wine matures on the lees without bâtonnage. Around 20% new oak provides subtle spice without dominating. Minimal sulphur use (maximum 35 mg/l) underscores Morey’s purist philosophy.
- Food Pairings
- A wine for discerning combinations: scallops with butter sauce, lobster, turbot, Bresse chicken with morels, Comté or Beaufort. Also a revelation with risotto with white truffle.
- Special Features
- This 2023 is the most dynamic and assertive wine in Thomas Morey’s current Premier Cru collection – a Chassagne with muscle, juice and enormous ageing potential. A wine that brings pleasure now, but will also reward patience.
