Wine Description for Bourgogne Aligoté „Chaumont“ AOC 2023 by Jérôme Galeyrand

Character
Jérôme Galeyrand belongs to those quiet perfectionists of the Côte de Nuits who work with artisanal care and a deep respect for terroir. His Bourgogne Aligoté „Chaumont“ is no marginal product, but a seriously intended white wine – dry, vibrant and characterised by a precision one does not always expect from this often underestimated appellation. A wine that demonstrates that Aligoté, in the right hands, is far more than a modest accompaniment.
Terroir & Origin
The Bourgogne Aligoté appellation permits the vinification of this ancient Burgundian grape variety from various vineyard sites across the region. Galeyrand, based in Gevrey-Chambertin, sources his fruit from carefully selected parcels. The vintage 2023 was characterised in Burgundy by warmth and dryness – a year that produced concentrated wines with ripe fruit profiles, whilst testing the natural freshness of Aligoté. In responsible hands, however, balanced and characterful wines emerged.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Aligoté is Burgundy’s second white grape variety – historically deeply rooted, long underestimated. It is renowned for its natural acidity structure, its mineral texture and its ability to clearly reflect terroir. Galeyrand works according to biodynamic principles, with minimal cellar intervention and a focus on natural fermentation. The ageing is handled carefully to preserve the freshness and character of the grape variety – without overworking it through excessive oak.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The vibrant acidity and mineral freshness of this Aligoté make it a versatile table companion. Classically, it pairs with Gougères and Escargots à la bourguignonne. It also harmonises beautifully with goat’s cheese, oysters, grilled fish or a simple Poulet rôti. Last but not least, following tradition, it is the indispensable base for an authentic Kir bourguignon.
