Wine Description for Blaufränkisch Leithaberg DAC 2019 by Heinrich

Colour & Appearance
Luminous purple-red with violet reflections and a deep, almost black core – a Blaufränkisch that reveals its youthfulness and concentration immediately in the glass.
Nose
Textbook varietal character: this Blaufränkisch presents itself with ripe blackberries and dark cherries merging with elderberries into a multifaceted fruit profile that never becomes cooked. The spicy component with black pepper, figs and a hint of cinnamon blossom lends depth and complexity to the aromatic profile – a masterclass in Austrian Blaufränkisch styling.
Palate
On the palate, a fascinating interplay unfolds: juicy fruit meets fine-grained tannins that provide structure without dominating. The savoury spice from the nose returns, beneath which broils a dark fruit intensity reminiscent of liquid lava. Remarkable is the transparency despite concentration – the wine possesses grip and tension, carried by a ripe, vibrant acidity that invites you to keep drinking. An almost unbridled drinking pleasure.
Finish
Medium to long, with lingering fruit and fine pepper spice. The tannins remain present but supple, the acidity provides freshness and length.
Terroir & Origin
From the Leithaberg DAC, where limestone and slate give Blaufränkisch its characteristic minerality and finesse. The Pannonian climate at Lake Neusiedl provides perfect ripening conditions.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Biodynamically farmed, hand-harvested in mid-September. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts on the skins in wooden fermentation vats and steel. 18 months ageing on the lees in fermentation vats and used 500-litre tonneaux – a vinification that gives the wine time and expression.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Braised beef, venison goulash, lamb rack with herb crust, aged alpine cheese or beef roulades – this Blaufränkisch demands hearty, aromatic cuisine.
Special Features
A prime example of modern Austrian Blaufränkisch: organically biodynamic, crafted with care, with soul and drinkability. Heinrich proves once again why Burgenland ranks among Europe’s most exciting Blaufränkisch terroirs.
