Wine Description for Marienthaler Trotzenberg 2022 by Bertram-Baltes

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, pale ruby red with cherry-red core. The transparency already reveals the elegant winemaking – a Pinot Noir that prioritises finesse over extraction.
Nose
Captivating clarity and precision: red cherries, wild strawberries and a hint of raspberry dominate. Beneath, fine notes of rose petals, a touch of damp earth and delicate herbal spice. The aromatics remain airy and unobtrusive – typical of cool Ahr vineyard sites and careful cellar work.
Palate
At just 11.5% alcohol, this Pinot demonstrates that lightness is no weakness. The acidity is vibrant and carries the red fruit effortlessly. On the palate, a silky texture unfolds with fine grip, never turning harsh. The fruit remains present, but is accompanied by mineral tension and subtle spice. A wine that need not shout to be heard.
Finish
Medium length, fresh and with fine cherry fruit that lingers. The acidity keeps the wine lively to the very end – a wine that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
Marienthaler Trotzenberg ranks among the Ahr’s premium vineyard sites. The extreme steep slopes around Dernau on slate and graywacke shape this wine’s character. The cool microclimate and organic viticulture – converted in the first year after takeover – ensure freshness and precision.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Noir, carefully crafted. Benny Baltes favours restrained extraction and spontaneous fermentation. The result: a Pinot that values elegance over power, expression over loudness.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Perfect with pan-fried salmon, rare duck breast, Coq au Vin or mushroom risotto. The acidity and lightness make it an ideal companion to charcuterie and aged Comté.
Special Features
The debut vintage of a new winemaking couple who already demonstrate where their journey is heading: organic, biodynamic, with dreams of permaculture. A promising start from Julia Bertram and Benny Baltes – the new star on the Ahr horizon.
