Wine Description for Maustal Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs 2020 by Luckert – Zehnthof

Colour & Appearance
Muted garnet red with vibrant violet reflections – a play of colour that already announces the youthfulness of this Großes Gewächs in the glass.
Nose
Mineral and precise: graphite and earthy notes form the foundation, above which a vibrant red fruit palette unfolds. Sour cherries, wild raspberries, redcurrants and a hint of pomegranate meld with floral nuances of rose, ivy and elderflower. This delicate, almost Burgundian finesse makes it immediately clear: here the terroir speaks.
Palate
Dancelike and lively – the wine practically floats across the tongue. The acidity is demanding and refreshing in equal measure, the tannins fine-grained and piquantly structured. Despite its youth, the Spätburgunder already displays impressive complexity, with the mineral imprint of the Muschelkalk constantly present. Those wishing to drink it now should give it generous air – decanting is essential.
Finish
Long, precise and full of tension. The aftertaste promises considerable ageing potential and hints at how this wine will develop in the years to come.
Terroir & Origin
The Maustal near Sulzfeld am Main is a four-hectare steep vineyard site facing south and south-east. The sparse, skeleton-rich Obere Muschelkalk forces the approximately 25-year-old vines to dig deep and fundamentally shapes the mineral character of this wine. These are the oldest self-planted vines of the estate.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested and completely destemmed, spontaneously fermented in open vats without chaptalization. Around two weeks of skin contact, followed by eighteen months of ageing in Burgundy barrels, one third of which are new. A vinification that focuses on precision and terroir expression.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Monkfish medallions with smoked bacon on red wine risotto, crispy roasted guinea fowl with blood sausage praline, beetroot and chard or the surprising combination of radishes and raspberries with cream cheese on pumpernickel soil.
Special Features
A Großes Gewächs from Franconia that combines Burgundian finesse with Franconian straightforwardness. At 13% alcohol, elegantly restrained and entirely focused on finesse and terroir expression.
