Wine Description for Dernauer Hardtberg 2022 by Bertram-Baltes

Colour & Appearance
Muted cherry red with ruby reflections that lighten towards the rim – a classic profile for cool climate and moderate 11.5% alcohol.
Nose
This Pinot demands patience. Initially, malty notes, cedarwood and leather present themselves, alongside a pronounced umami component reminiscent of tobacco. With air contact, dark berries, cranberries and surprisingly figs unfold – a wine that needs time in the glass to reveal its full aromatic potential.
Palate
The umami theme initially dominates on the palate as well: hints of meat stock and soy sauce reveal the youthfulness of this 2022. Beneath lies a juicy fruit layer of plum, blackberry and dark cherry. The texture is silky, the structure promises development. This is not a pleasing immediate drinker, but a serious, terroir-driven Burgundian style with Burgundian restraint.
Finish
Medium length with fine spice and lingering fruit echoes. The native oak provides subtle framing without imposing.
Terroir & Origin
From the steep vineyard site Dernauer Hardtberg in the Ahr valley, one of Germany’s finest Pinot Noir sites. The extreme gradient and slate soils shape structure and minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spätburgunder, hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented in barrels of native oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered – a purist approach that preserves the wine’s authenticity. The estate converted to organic viticulture in 2022, with biodynamic certification being pursued.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The umami intensity calls for grilled dishes and braised meats: roast pork with crackling and damson sauce, wok-fried prawns with soy sauce or even grilled pointed cabbage. Serve slightly chilled (14-16°C) and decanted without fail.
Special Features
The debut vintage from Julia Bertram and Benny Baltes following their return from Franconia to the Ahr. A promising opening with considerable ageing potential – this wine will be even more interesting in 3-5 years.
