Wine Description for Riesling Kirchenstück GG 2023 from Battenfeld-Spanier

Colour & Appearance
Medium straw yellow with vibrant reflections – a classic appearance for a young Rheinhessen Riesling from chalky soils.
Nose
Deep and juicy with a fascinating array of aromas: Bitter Lemon and mint set the tone, supported by fresh herbs and surprising red berries. These are joined by pepper, a fine smoky note, mineral stone and a subtle hint of pistachios – a complex, multi-layered bouquet.
Palate
Here the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: fleshy in texture, lightly smoky, with yellow spice notes. The underlying energy develops exponentially with every second – a rapid, unstoppable journey. The Riesling becomes increasingly saline and mouth-watering, a perfect symbiosis of finesse, power and tension. At 12.5% alcohol it remains elegant and inviting to drink.
Finish
Long, mineral and carried by a persistent salinity that echoes for minutes afterwards. The energy of the palate continues and leaves a lasting impression.
Terroir & Origin
The Kirchenstück in Hohen-Sülzen is a historic vineyard site with over 400 years of vine-growing history. The sloping vineyard at 150 metres altitude with a 15% gradient is characterised by clayey, chalky stones – so soft that they can be crumbled. This strongly calcareous subsoil provides optimal nutrients and directly shapes the wine’s pronounced minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling from H.O. Spanier’s oldest vineyard, planted in the 1960s. Hand-harvested with selection, spontaneous fermentation and maturation in large oak casks and double casks – classic craftsmanship for Große Gewächse.
Food Recommendations
The saline minerality and smoky spice make this Riesling ideal for pan-fried char, scallops, calf’s sweetbread or asparagus with brown butter. Also a revelation with mature Comté or goat’s cheese.
Special Features
A Große Gewächs that bears the distinctive signature of Battenfeld-Spanier: depth rather than superficiality, energy rather than opulence, tension rather than agreeability. A wine that deserves time and rewards it.
