Wine Description for Basarin Barbaresco DOCG 2023 1500ml Magnum by Sottimano

Character
The Basarin Barbaresco DOCG 2023 by Sottimano embodies everything the Langhe stands for: depth, dignity and patience. Bottled as a Magnum, the wine enjoys ideal ageing conditions – the larger bottle volume slows oxidation and grants the Nebbiolo time to fully unfold its complex soul. A wine for those who understand that greatness is not forced, but awaited.
Terroir & Origin
The Basarin vineyard site lies at the heart of Neive, one of the three core zones of the Barbaresco region in Piedmont. The characteristic Tortonian soils – calcareous, compact marls with high sand content – impart a distinctive aromatic finesse and elegance to the wines of this site. The Langhe climate, marked by hot summers and cool autumn nights, favours the slow, steady ripening of Nebbiolo and preserves the floral tension typical of Basarin.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of Italy’s most demanding and characterful grape varieties – thin-skinned, tannic-rich, high in acidity and of extraordinary longevity. The Sottimano family ranks among Barbaresco’s style-defining winemakers and practises an approach that combines artisanal care with respect for terroir. Ageing takes place traditionally in large wooden casks (Botti), which lend the wine structure and depth without obscuring the varietal transparency. The Magnum bottling underscores the commitment to long-term cellar ageing.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A Barbaresco of this calibre calls for dishes with substance and depth. Braised beef cheeks, wild ragù over Tajarin or a classic Brasato al Barolo are ideal companions. The wine also harmonises beautifully with aged Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle dishes and game birds. Those with patience should allow the Magnum to rest in the cellar for a few more years – the reward will be extraordinary.
