Wine Description for Ahrweiler Rosenthal 2023 by Bertram-Baltes

Colour & Appearance
Transparent, luminous ruby red – a Pinot Noir that does not hide its origins and natural winemaking approach. The clarity in the glass already reveals the precise signature of Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes.
Nose
Initially, a subtle reduction presents itself – a hint of gunpowder, which quickly dissipates to reveal the underlying aromas. Then unfolds a multi-layered bouquet of sweet and sour cherries, raspberries and blackcurrant. Fine notes of brioche, herbs and undergrowth complement this – an elegant combination of fruit and spice.
Palate
Juicy and approachable, the Rosenthal presents itself on the palate. A vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins structure the wine without dominating. Remarkable is the interplay between pleasant fullness and a mineral coolness that lends the wine freshness and precision. The moderate alcohol content of 11.5% underscores its elegant, understated character.
Finish
Clear and precise with lingering fruit and forest notes. The mineral component remains perceptible and gives the wine a pleasant length.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from parcels above the old town of Ahrweiler, situated on dry stone walls at 120 to 220 metres altitude facing south. The soil of greywacke, sandy loess loam and quartz inclusions distinctly shapes the mineral signature of this wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir from organic-biodynamic cultivation following permafrost culture principles. Spontaneous fermentation in open stainless steel fermenters, maturation over two winters in used large and medium oak casks. Without chaptalization, deliberately reductive winemaking with minimal sulphiting before bottling.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile companion to roasted poultry, duck breast roasted pink, braised rabbit or mushroom dishes. Also an excellent choice with aged Comté or Reblochon.
Special Characteristics
An authentic representative of modern German Pinot Noir: clear, unfiltered and terroir-driven. The consistently natural working methods make this wine an honest ambassador of its origins.
