Wine Description for Monte Bianco Rouge VdF 2022 by Abbatucci
- Colour & Appearance
- Transparent ruby red with garnet rim – a wine that reveals its elegance right in the glass.
- Nose
- A true cherry festival: sour cherries, black cherries, bright red sweet cherries and stony morello cherries with delicate stone fruit notes dominate the bouquet. Fine violet notes, blackcurrant leaf, juniper berries and allspice join in, lending the fruit explosion a spicy, Mediterranean depth.
- Palate
- Silky and elegant, the Monte Bianco flows across the tongue, carried by a fine-meshed, fine-grained tannin that recalls magnesium powder. The delicate astringency frames the unbridled fruit perfectly without dominating it. The herbal-green tannins provide structure and an uninhibited drinking flow, whilst a fresh acidity arc guarantees tension and vibrancy.
- Finish
- Ethereally cool with a red fruit afterglow and lingering cherry finale – long, precise, remarkably drinkable.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Sciaccarellu grapes grow at approximately 100 metres above sea level on Corsica’s characteristic granite soils. Domaine Comte Abbatucci manages 21 hectares according to biodynamic principles (Demeter-certified) and is regarded as one of the island’s flagship estates.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Sciaccarellu from old vines with low yields (approximately 25 hl/ha). Harvested early in the morning, destemmed and pressed immediately. Fermentation at 18 degrees, followed by five months maturation in stainless steel. Bottled unfiltered and only lightly filtered. As French AOC regulations restrict indigenous varieties, the wine is marketed as Vin de France.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Grilled sardines, herb-grilled lamb chops or crostini with smoked aubergine caviar and tomato compote pair perfectly with the Mediterranean fruit and fine tannin structure of this wine.
- Special Features
- An authentic ambassador of Corsican wine culture: Abbatucci preserved the old indigenous varieties in the 1960s and 1970s when modern winemaking turned to international grape varieties. The Monte Bianco impressively demonstrates the potential inherent in the native Sciaccarellu grape.
