Wine Description for Vom Stein Riesling Federspiel Dry 2006 by Nikolaihof
- Colour & Appearance
- Powerful, luminous yellow – the colour recalls a ripe Golden Delicious, warm and inviting. Not a trace of fatigue, despite nearly two decades under its belt.
- Nose
- The nose astonishes with its freshness and complexity. Ripe fruits – apple, pear, a hint of citrus zest – combine with delicate floral notes and a fine, almost mineral vegetable spice. Nothing demands attention, everything fits together. This is no loud wine – it whispers, and one listens gladly.
- Palate
- The first sip sets the tone: fresh, clear, harmonious. Acidity, residual sweetness, alcohol and texture exist in rare balance. The body is slender, the texture silky, the elegance unobtrusive. A wine that demands no attention – and yet receives it nonetheless. You set the glass down and inevitably reach for it again.
- Finish
- Medium length, fine and remarkably invigorating. No grand finale, but an honest one – clean, mineral, with a light echo of ripe fruit and spice. Exactly what one expects from a mature Federspiel.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Mautern vineyard site »Vom Stein« is a cru within the Ried Silberbichl in the Wachau – just 4.2 hectares, facing north-northeast, at 209 to 237 metres above sea level. The soils of rigolsol, loam, loess and Danube gravel impart the wine with subtle minerality and structured depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling, classified as Federspiel – the middle tier of the Wachau wine pyramid, standing for drinkability and freshness. At 12.0 % vol., the wine remains light-footed. Nikolaihof, one of the oldest and most significant estates in the Wachau, works biodynamically – and you can taste it in the purity of expression.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with pike-perch on a vegetable bed, Wiener Backhendl or a classic Tafelspitz. This wine also cuts a fine figure as an accompaniment to aged alpine cheese or a simple charcuterie board.
- Special Features
- This wine was released as an Archive Release 2024 – a testament to Nikolaihof’s conviction that great wines need time. The 2006 vintage has developed magnificently: a wine that demonstrates Federspiel Riesling from the Wachau possesses far greater ageing potential than its light style might suggest.
