Wine Description for Volnay-Gigotte 1er Cru AOC 2023 by Darviot-Perrin
- Colour & Appearance
- A luminous deep cherry red with delicate violet reflections flows through the glass – youthful and concentrated, with bright facets that bear witness to the freshness of the vintage.
- Nose
- Here Premier Cru class reveals itself in its purest form: sour cherry and morello cherry dominate with cool precision, underpinned by wild raspberry and redcurrant. The fruit remains restrained, almost meditative. Beneath this unfolds the typical Burgundy terroir: undergrowth, forest floor, damp earth – earthy notes that lend the wine depth without weighing it down. Spicy accents of juniper, liquorice and black pepper mingle with herbs such as thyme and rosemary. A hint of lightly roasted coffee rounds off the complex aromatic interplay – everything suggested, nothing obtrusive.
- Palate
- On the palate, the true elegance of this Volnay unfolds: The sour cherry fruit builds with concentration, carried by a precise, energetic acidity that lends the wine tension and definition. The texture is silky-mineral, almost weightless – a hallmark of great Pinot Noirs. The forest and herb notes remain subtly present, grounding the wine without overwhelming the fruit. The tannin is fine-grained and perfectly integrated.
- Finish
- The aftertaste concentrates on a juicy-tart cherry fruit with fine nervosity, accompanied by a whisper of spice and the crisp association of sourdough crust. Long, precise, elegant.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Volnay-Gigotte Premier Cru hails from one of Volnay’s finest vineyard sites, renowned for wines of great finesse and elegance. The limestone-dominated terroir imparts the Pinot Noir with its characteristic minerality and depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Pinot Noir from Darviot-Perrin, an estate known for classical, terroir-driven Burgundies. The ageing is conducted traditionally, with respect for the provenance and without excessive oak – the wine speaks for itself.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A wine for duck breast roasted pink, venison loin with lingonberries, Coq au Vin or Bresse pigeon. Also an excellent choice with aged Comté or Époisses.
- Special Characteristics
- A classical Burgundy of great clarity – contemporary in its expression, yet deeply rooted in tradition. The 2023 vintage already shows itself to be approachable, but will continue to gain in complexity over the next 8–12 years.
