Wine Description for Viñas de Gain Tinto 2018 1500ml Magnum by Artadi
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, deep purple with delicate violet reflections – a wine that already promises energy and depth in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose is dark and yet suffused with a pleasant coolness. Morello cherries, black cherry and blackberry dominate with confidence, accompanied by floral notes of elderflower and the warm hint of rosehip tea. In the background, black pepper and a touch of liquorice play an elegant supporting role – complex, inviting, precise.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Viñas de Gain reveals itself in silky, elegant form: taut and juicy at once, with a fruit fullness that never seems excessive. The vibrant acidity and cool mouthfeel provide tension and freshness, whilst the alcohol, despite a substantial 14.5% vol., remains exemplarily integrated – barely perceptible, completely harmonious.
- Finish
- Long, mineral and carried by fine spice. The fruit resonates with impact, without becoming heavy – a finish with genuine character and length.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from some of the finest vineyard sites around Laguardia – including San Martín, Las Ventas and Castejones – at elevations between 450 and 700 metres. Clay-rich topsoils over a limestone base give the wine its characteristic minerality and freshness. A terroir that brings Tempranillo to its finest expression.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Tempranillo, hand-harvested in 10-kilo boxes. Following a 48-hour cold maceration, spontaneous fermentation took place over 12 days in large stainless steel tanks. Ageing for twelve months in French oak barrels – where malolactic fermentation also occurred – gives the wine structure without clouding its fruit clarity.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal companion to grilled T-bone steak with green beans and rosemary potatoes or a lamb rack with herb crust, artichoke hearts and red lentil salad. Surprisingly harmonious also with a spicy ratatouille with coconut and basmati rice.
- Special Features
- Artadi has deliberately distanced itself from the Consejo Regulador of Rioja – out of conviction, not defiance. Since the 2015 vintage, all wines appear without the Rioja designation of origin, as simple table wines. What is missing on the label is found in the glass: a wine of undeniable quality and identity. The magnum bottle also promises particularly harmonious ageing over the coming years.
