Wine Description for Vieille Vigne du Levant Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2005 by Larmandier-Bernier

Character
Pierre Larmandier is among those biodynamic winemakers of Champagne who create champagnes of extraordinary depth with uncompromising precision and patience. This Vieille Vigne du Levant from old vines embodies the purist vision of a Blanc de Blancs: mineral, taut and of impressive ageing potential. The Extra Brut dosage allows the wine its authentic expression, without masking it through sweetness. After nearly two decades, the 2005 displays that complexity of maturity which distinguishes great vintages.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from Grand Cru vineyard sites on the Côte des Blancs, the epicentre of Chardonnay in Champagne. Larmandier-Bernier cultivates old vines there on the famous chalk soils that lend the region its distinctive minerality. The 2005 vintage is considered one of the classic champagne vintages of the past century – balanced, with good acidity structure and excellent ageing potential. Levant denotes the east-facing aspect of the parcel, which produces particularly fresh, tense wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay from old vines develops particular concentration and complexity. Larmandier-Bernier forgoes herbicides and synthetic treatments, working with natural yeasts and minimal sulphur. The long maturation on the lees and the restrained dosage underscore the terroir-driven approach of the house. This philosophy stands in contrast to many industrially produced champagnes and reflects a craft tradition that places authenticity above commerce.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A champagne of this maturity and structure demands sophisticated accompaniment: scallops with brown butter, turbot with champagne sauce, Comté or Beaufort d’Alpage. It also reveals its full class with truffle dishes or lobster. The mineral precision harmonises equally well with oysters or a simple risotto with Parmesan.
