Wine description for Terre de Vertus Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature 2016 1500ml Magnum by Larmandier-Bernier

Character
A Champagne of almost ascetic purity. The Brut Nature dispenses entirely with dosage – zero grams of sugar, zero distraction. What remains is Chardonnay in its most naked form: saline, profoundly chalky, with a tension reminiscent of taut strings. Pierre Larmandier once said that a good Champagne follows the rules of production, whilst a great one is born when you break them. This wine breaks them with devotion. The magnum bottle does the rest: slower maturation, finer mousse, greater depth.
Terroir & Origin
Vertus Premier Cru, the southern outpost of the Côte des Blancs – here Chardonnay grows on pure chalk soils, lending the wine a vibrant, almost electrifying structure. Larmandier-Bernier farms 17 plots from Vertus to Avize, biodynamically since 1999, as one of the very first estates in Champagne to do so. Herbicides were abandoned as early as 1992. The house takes a radical approach to terroir: the vineyard decides, not the cellar.
Grape Variety & Vinification
One hundred per cent Chardonnay – Blanc de Blancs in its purest expression. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, ageing in large wooden casks from the Austrian cooperage Stockinger, no filtration, no fining. The names of the cuvées – Longitude, Latitude, Terre de Vertus – read like coordinates on a map. This is no coincidence, but a matter of conviction: this wine seeks to express origin, not style.
Food Pairings
The cool presence and saline depth of this Champagne call for the sea: oysters, ceviche, sashimi, sole in lemon butter. Aged Comté or a mature Parmigiano also find a worthy partner here. Those wishing to celebrate the moment should drink it on its own – as an aperitif that redefines the very concept.
