Wine description for Vi Ranci de Gramona Batlle N°01/2024 500ml by Gramona
- Character
- A Rancio – that ancient, almost forgotten category of oxidatively aged wines once part of everyday life across the Mediterranean. Dry, at 22% ABV, it reveals notes of walnut, dried figs, caramel and orange zest, along with that fine bitter note inherent to great oxidative wines. A wine of patience: concentrated, nutty, long on the finish. In the numbered edition Batlle N°01/2024 in a handy 500 ml format.
- Terroir & Origin
- Gramona is based in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia in the Penedès, family-owned since 1850 and one of Spain’s most respected producers. The vines are rooted in calcareous soils with fossil deposits that lend the region its mineral clarity. Since 2000, the roughly 150 hectares have been farmed organically – a step that was revolutionary in the Penedès at the time; the label bears the Demeter logo.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- The classic Penedès varieties Xarel·lo, Macabeu and Parellada form the estate’s foundation. With the Vi Ranci, however, time is what matters most: the wine ages oxidatively over years, gaining depth, nuttiness and that characteristic rancio spice reminiscent of old solera traditions – a method Gramona also knows and values for its great sparkling wines.
- Food Pairings
- A wine for the end of a meal or the quiet moment afterwards. Ideal with Manchego and other hard cheeses, with almonds, walnuts and dried dates. Classically, it pairs with Catalan desserts such as Crema Catalana or Panellets, but it also stands up to a good cigar. Serve lightly chilled – and enjoy in small sips.
