Wine description for Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC Casal Vegri Decannale 2013 by Ca´ La Bionda

Character
The Casal Vegri Decannale represents the ambitious side of Valpolicella Classico, far removed from simple everyday wines. Released with ten years of bottle maturity – hence „Decannale“ – this Superiore demonstrates the remarkable longevity that traditionally vinified Corvina cuvées can develop. Ca‘ La Bionda, a family estate at the heart of the Classico zone, pursues a artisanal, terroir-focused approach that places the elegance and minerality of the limestone soils front and centre.
Terroir & Origin
Valpolicella Classico stretches across the hills northwest of Verona, where calcareous soils and a temperate climate with cooling influences from the nearby pre-Alps create ideal conditions. Ca‘ La Bionda manages vineyards in privileged sites where elevation provides fresh acidity and aromatic precision. This zone produces Valpolicellas that combine structure with finesse – an alternative to the concentration of Amarone production.
Grape variety & Vinification
The classic trinity of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella forms the backbone of this cuvée. Corvina delivers the characteristic cherry fruit and silky texture, Corvinone contributes structure and depth, whilst Rondinella adds colour and tannin. The moderate alcohol content of 13.5% points to a respectful handling of the fruit, without appassimento techniques. The years of maturation before release allow the wine to transform its primary fruit into more complex tertiary aromas – a statement for patience in a fast-moving wine world.
Food pairing suggestions
A wine of this maturity demands thoughtful combinations: braised beef, game with polenta or aged Parmigiano Reggiano harmonise with its developed aromatics. Mushroom risotto or pasta with ragù also underscore the earthy, spicy notes of mature Valpolicella. The vibrant acidity makes it an ideal companion to the substantial Veronese cuisine.
