Wine description for Tommy Ferriol VdF rouge 2024 by Matassa

Colour & Appearance
A transparent garnet in the glass, revealing the minimalist vinification and brief skin contact – a red wine that consciously resists extraction and concentration.
Nose
Initially presenting a compote of red and dark berries with sour cherries. With air exposure, the aromatic Muscat à Petit Grains unfolds and transforms the wine into an almost southern French cousin of the Muscat Trollinger: roses, muscat and a surprising hop note meet strawberries, raspberries, cassis and blackcurrants. Mineral stone and wild herbs join the party – a fascinating aromatic complexity at just 10% alcohol.
Palate
Juicy and lively, the Tommy Ferriol presents itself on the palate. Red berry fruit dominates, accompanied by herbs and that characteristic hop note. An agile acidity drives the wine forward, whilst fine-grained tannins provide surprising grip – remarkable given the brief three-day skin contact. This is tonic, fresh, absolutely moreish.
Finish
Clean, fresh and with lingering fruit – a wine that doesn’t seek to impress through length, but rather through its drinkability and vibrancy.
Grape Variety & Vinification
An unusual cuvée of 70% Syrah from ancient vines and 30% Muscat à Petit Grains. Just three days of skin contact during fermentation, then pressed and the wine aged neutrally. This minimalist intervention results in a wine of remarkable freshness and drinking pleasure.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The perfect vin de soif for convivial gatherings. Pairs beautifully with charcuterie, terrine, grilled vegetables, pizza or simply as an aperitif. Also a delight with light pasta dishes or Provençal herb-based dishes.
Special Features
Formerly known as Brutal Rouge, now called Tommy Ferriol. An exemplary natural wine from Roussillon that proves great wines needn’t be heavy. At 10% alcohol, a textbook example of elegance through restraint – a wine that makes you wonder why you didn’t order the magnum straight away.
