Wine Description for Blanc d’Argile Brut Nature R22 1500ml Magnum by Vouette & Sorbée

Character
The Blanc d’Argile from Vouette & Sorbée is a Champagne that speaks uncompromisingly for itself – without dosage, without corrections, without compromise. As a Brut Nature, it carries zero grams of residual sugar and thereby reveals the character of its origin completely. The Magnum bottle (1500 ml) promises a particularly slow, harmonious maturation and lends the wine an additional depth and complexity that smaller formats simply cannot achieve. The designation R22 refers to the house’s Récoltant philosophy: wine as an authentic expression of place and craft.
Terroir & Origin
Bertrand Gautherot manages his vineyard sites in Buxières-sur-Arce in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost corner of Champagne. The name Blanc d’Argile – „white clay“ – is programmatic: the vines are rooted in Kimmeridgian clay soils, the same limestone clay stone that brings mineral depth to Chablis and Sancerre. These soils impart a distinctive, almost saline minerality to the wine and a cool austerity that sets it clearly apart from Champagnes from chalk soils. Gautherot works biodynamically – the vineyards are certified by Demeter – and understands his work as a dialogue with the soil, not an intervention.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Chardonnay from biodynamic viticulture forms the foundation of this Champagne. Vinification follows a minimalist approach: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, no use of sulphur beyond the absolutely necessary minimum, no fining agents. The absence of dosage in the Brut Nature is not a marketing decision here, but a consistent philosophy – the wine is meant to speak, not to be embellished. The result is a Champagne of great honesty and artisanal integrity.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The bone-dry, mineral character of Blanc d’Argile makes it ideally suited to accompany oysters and raw seafood. It also harmonises beautifully with aged Comté, sea bass with herbs or simply with fresh baguette and salted butter – dishes that appreciate restraint and allow the wine to take centre stage.
