Winemaker Manfred Tement – Weingut Tement

Some wine estates define a region. Weingut Tement in Ehrenhausen put South Styria on the international wine map. When Manfred Tement took over his early-deceased father's business in 1976, he farmed just three hectares. Today almost 100 hectares stretch across the dramatic steep slopes on both sides of the Slovenian border.

The Sauvignon Blanc from the Zieregg ranks among the great white wines of the world; in 1991 Der Feinschmecker named it the best of its kind in the world. Since 2022 the estate has worked entirely biodynamically according to Demeter guidelines. The third generation, sons Armin and Stefan, carries the legacy forward without blurring their father's signature.

The estate's story begins in 1959, when Josef Tement senior and his wife Edina acquired two hectares of vineyard. His early death in 1976 forced the then 25-year-old Manfred Tement to take on responsibility. What followed was one of the most remarkable success stories in Austrian wine.

From family business to flagship of South Styria

The estate's story begins in 1959, when Josef Tement senior and his wife Edina acquired two hectares of vineyard. His early death in 1976 forced the then 25-year-old Manfred Tement to take on responsibility. What followed was one of the most remarkable success stories in Austrian wine.

Manfred Tement recognised early on the potential of Sauvignon Blanc in the calcareous soils of South Styria. In 1986 he co-founded, together with like-minded growers, the Steirische Klassik (STK), a quality initiative that won international recognition for Styrian white wines. The neighbouring Weingut Sattlerhof is also among the founding members of the STK and, together with Tement, shapes the face of the region.

Zieregg, one vineyard with four faces

The Zieregg is the heart of the estate. This grand cru site spans both sides of the Austrian-Slovenian border and is divided into four distinct parcels: the Kapelle with its oldest vines and the striking wayside shrine, the Kår with an especially chalk-rich subsoil, the Steilriegel with slopes of up to 70 percent, and the classic Zieregg as the core of the site.

On the Slovenian side the family farms a further 20 hectares under the name Ciringa. The Ciringa Fosilni Breg shows impressively how the same signature expresses itself on different terroirs. The Zieregg Kapelle, by contrast, represents the quintessence of the Austrian side.

Biodynamics as the logical consequence

The conversion to biodynamic farming began in 2017 and was completed in 2022 with Demeter certification. For Tement this was no fashionable U-turn but the consistent development of a philosophy that has always put the soil at the centre. Membership of Respekt-BIODYN underlines this commitment.

In the cellar, restraint dominates. Spontaneous fermentation, long lees ageing and the careful use of large wooden casks shape the style. The result is wines of remarkable tension between fruit and minerality, between approachability and depth.

Three generations, one vision

With Armin (in the business since 2005) and Stefan (since 2010), the third generation is already at work on the estate. Armin is responsible for viticulture and cellar, Stefan concentrates on sales and the Weinhotel Gut Pössnitzberg. The sons bring new impulses without questioning their father's basic principles.

The entry-level wines, above all the precise Kalk & Kreide, make the Tement style accessible. The single-site wines then show the full range of the terroir. And at the very top stand those rare bottlings that prove Sauvignon Blanc in South Styria can reach an expressive power that challenges even the best Loire wines.
