Wine Description for Ried Sulz Weisser Burgunder Erste STK Lage 2021 by Tement

Colour & Appearance
Luminous straw yellow with shimmering golden reflections.
Nose
This Weissburgunder opens with serene confidence. Alongside ripe mirabelle, juicy pear and white redcurrant, the skin of red apples stands out unexpectedly. The extended period of lees ageing lends subtle notes of chopped almonds, fresh brioche and marzipan to the bouquet. Herbal nuances of sage, garden cress and lemon balm, as well as hints of coriander seed, cinnamon and white pepper, impart tremendous complexity to the glass.
Palate
On the palate, this wine reveals itself to be radically linear, razor-sharp and entirely devoid of any sluggish richness. A vibrant, taut acidity structure challenges the palate. The chalky texture offers a firm grip, while the delicate, slightly bitter apple skin structure endows the wine with juiciness and length. The herbal intensity drives the drinkability forward without compromise – an uncompromising, demanding style for connoisseurs.
Terroir & Origin
The Ried Sulz in Southern Styria is considered the home of this grape variety at the Tement estate. It is a basin-like protected, south-southwest-facing hillside location with a 35% gradient at 400 to 473 metres above sea level. The subsoil of calcareous marl and loamy sand gives the wine its distinctive, chalky precision.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder). Following natural spontaneous fermentation, the wine rested unfiltered on the fine lees for 30 months in large, neutral oak casks. The Tement winery strictly operates its steep slopes biodynamically according to Demeter guidelines.
Food Pairings
An outstanding match for pan-roasted turbot with wild herb salad, pan-fried veal sweetbreads with caper butter, or matured mountain cheese.
Particularities
A purist single-vineyard wine from the Erste STK Lage that dispenses entirely with superficial fruit or broad texture, delivering the unvarnished limestone terroir of Southern Styria directly into the glass.
