Vinhao

Vinhão is the deep, dark heart of the Portuguese north. As a teinturier grape, whose flesh is as red-pigmented as its skin, it produces wines of almost black colour and a remarkable, vibrant acidity. In the cool, Atlantic-influenced Vinho Verde region, it provides the foundation for red wines that, with their tart wild berry aromas and grippy tannins, transport the authentic character of their granite-driven homeland straight into the glass. It is a challenging grape, but one that rewards with a juicy energy that pairs outstandingly with hearty dishes.

Just how multi-faceted this headstrong variety can be is demonstrated by the Aphros Wine estate. Alongside the single-varietal Aphros Vinhão, which is aged in granite lagares, they also craft exciting blends: in the Phaunus Palhete, it is paired with the white Loureiro, while in the Phaunus Pet Nat Rosé, it joins forces with Alvarelhão to deliver sparkling freshness.
