Refosco

Refosco, above all the noble Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso with its characteristic red stems, is the untamed pride of Friuli. In north-eastern Italy, this autochthonous grape variety produces red wines of great individuality. Its essence is characterised by a deep, violet-shimmering colour, vibrant acidity and a fine wildness reminiscent of dark forest berries, damp earth and dried herbs. These wines possess character, yet accompany braised meat or hearty mushroom dishes quite outstandingly.

The Scarbolo winery demonstrates a wonderful intuition for this variety. Their single-varietal “Peraria” masterfully captures the dense fruit and fine-grained tannin of Refosco. Here, the tart, almost earthy rustic nature of the grape combines with a clarity that makes the wine immensely drinkable without stripping away its profound spice.
