Pignatello
Also known as: Perricone, Pignateddru, Guarnaccia
Pignatello is the Sicilian name for Perricone, an almost forgotten grape variety from the Palermo hinterland. The grape produces deeply coloured, spicy wines with firm tannins and a bitter, almost astringent note reminiscent of herbs and dark chocolate. Not a variety for light summer wines, but for people who value character over pleasantness.
Marco de Bartoli in Sicily is dedicated to this indigenous grape variety and vinifies it traditionally into sweet fortified wines. The wines are rare, uncompromising and display a smoky, intense aromatic profile.
