Palomino

Palomino is usually associated immediately with the chalky-white soils of Andalusia. Yet this historic grape variety possesses a fascinating facet away from the south, where it shines above all through its fine texture and a subtle, almost salty minerality. As a quiet variety, it convinces with structural calmness, delicate herbal notes and a fine phenolics that lends wines a wonderful freshness.

Just how valuable these characteristics are in the north of Spain is demonstrated by the Artuke winery in Rioja. In the white “Trascuevas”, Palomino provides grip and depth alongside Viura and Malvasia. In the red single-vineyard wine “La Condenada”, it is co-fermented in a historic field blend with Tempranillo and Graciano – a traditional method that gives the dense red wine an astonishing juiciness and a long, mineral finish.
