Juhfark

The Hungarian grape variety Juhfark, translated as “lamb’s tail” on account of the curved shape of its bunches, is inseparably linked to the basalt soils of its homeland. Celebrated on the extinct volcanoes of Somló, it produces wines of an almost archaic minerality. It is distinguished by a pronounced, vital acidity, underpinned by smoky notes, saline nuances and a fine phenolic character. On the palate it reveals itself as deep and demanding, often with aromas of quince, herbs and wet stone; it is an excellent partner for grilled fish or mature cheese.

Just how vibrantly this time-honoured grape can be interpreted is demonstrated by the estate Meinklang. In the lively “Foam Vulkan Petnat”, Juhfark is blended with Hárslevelü to create a yeasty, fresh pétillant naturel that captures the variety’s characteristic volcanic spice alongside an irrepressible joy of drinking.
