  • The Schlossberg Achkarren Grauburgunder GG 2023 from Franz Keller in Baden is an extraordinary representative of its variety, setting new standards with unusual precision, racy acidity and complex spice. A structure-focused, profound wine that deliberately reinterprets classical expectations of Pinot Gris.
  • 🎨 Colour: Rich, luminous golden yellow with shimmering lustre and fine red undertones
  • 👃 Aroma: Complex interplay of yellow and red fruit (wild raspberry, quince, peach, khaki), intense dried herb spice (bay leaf, marjoram, juniper, white pepper), woody notes of pine needles, doughy-nutty accents of marzipan and almond blossom
  • 👅 Palate: Racy and precise with prominent, distinctive acidity that carries a fine phenolic structure; crystalline acidity pressure on the mid-palate, powerful thrust without breadth, restrained stone fruit with reddish notes, crisp-astringent mouthfeel, on the finish freshly cut pear
  • 🎭 Character: Structure-focused, highly precise, intellectually demanding – a Pinot Gris that provokes contemplation rather than pleasing; enormous energy and clarity, invigorating and stimulating with considerable ageing potential
  • 🍽️ Food Pairing: Pan-fried turbot with herb crust, calf’s sweetbreads with morels, braised rabbit with tarragon, truffle risotto
  • ✨ Special Features: From old Pinot Gris genetics propagated via mass selection, grows on calcareous tuff stone in the steep, wind-protected core section of the Schlossberg, 12 months maturation in large wood plus 6 months in steel tank on full lees

Wine Description for Schlossberg Achkarren Grauburgunder GG 2023 by Franz Keller

Colour & Appearance
Rich, luminous golden yellow with shimmering brilliance and a characteristic reddish tint, which already hints optically at the complexity of this extraordinary Pinot Gris.
Nose
A Pinot Gris that redefines the variety: subtle, fine-boned, complex – without loudness, but with remarkable presence. The fruit palette oscillates between yellow and reddish accents: wild raspberry, unripe mango, quince, baked apple and candied quince. Fine, delicate red notes flash through repeatedly. Yet spice dominates: bay leaf, marjoram, juniper, white pepper – all in dried form. Combined with woody, ethereal notes of pine needles, a hint of smoke and doughy-nutty accents of marzipan, almond blossom and shortcrust pastry. A fragrance in constant motion, difficult to grasp – that is precisely what makes its charm.
Palate
Here this Pinot Gris sets new standards: racy, precise, carried by outstanding acidity that seems paradigmatic for the variety. A fine phenolic structure is immediately overtaken by crystal-clear acidity pressure. The fruit retreats – almost no fruit on the attack, only brilliant structure. The wine pushes forward powerfully, without breadth, without softness, but with enormous energy. Almond blossom, chopped nuts and dried herbs emerge across the texture. Restrained stone fruit with reddish undertones – wild raspberry, flashing blackcurrant. The mouthfeel: crisp, astringent, sharply defined.
Finish
Sudden opening: freshly cut pear, pure-toned and bright. An invigorating, revitalising effect that immediately creates desire for the next sip. Long, precise, sustained.
Terroir & Origin
From the heart of the Achkarrener Schlossberg, a steep, wind-protected parcel on calcareous tuff stone. This geological peculiarity gives the wine its mineral precision and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris of old genetics, propagated via Sélection Massale. Aged for 12 months in large wooden vessels, a further 6 months in stainless steel – each on full lees. This combination creates texture without dominance, structure without heaviness.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Calf’s sweetbread with morels, turbot with beurre blanc, pike-perch on fennel vegetables, risotto with white truffle, pan-fried scallops or mature Comté. The acidity and precision demand substance and finesse.
Special Characteristics
A Großes Gewächs that reinterprets the Pinot Gris variety: away from softness and breadth, towards clarity, acidity and tension. A wine for contemplation, which requires time and rewards it.
