Wine Description for Sankt Laurent Badischer Landwein 2022 by Forgeurac
- Colour & Appearance
- Dense cherry red with luminous violet reflections – the colour immediately reveals the intensity of this unadorned, unfiltered wine.
- Nose
- Opulent and multi-layered: sour cherries and cassis dominate initially, followed by blueberries, blackberries and sweet wild raspberries. With air contact, a fascinating Mediterranean side unfolds with herbal notes and floral aromas. The used barriques impart a warm, yet never intrusive oak character.
- Palate
- Here the true strength of this Sankt Laurent reveals itself: juiciness meets vibrant acidity – precisely what characterises this grape variety and what is unfortunately all too often corrected away. The fruit remains present, the invigorating spice and herbal aromas ensure drinkability. A charming fruit sweetness balances the structure perfectly. At 12% alcohol, the wine remains elegant and approachable.
- Finish
- Medium length with lingering cherry fruit and a refreshing acidity that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the Hasselbach vineyard site in Baden, a terroir with limestone, high clay content and iron-rich, red soil. At only 27 kg/Ar (equivalent to 20 hl/ha), this is a concentrated yet unmanipulated wine with genuine site character.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Hand-harvested on 21 September 2022, 100% whole-bunch fermentation with stems, foot-trodden – it hardly gets more archaic. Approximately three weeks of maceration, everything fermented spontaneously, no juice run-off (which would be customary for Sankt Laurent), unfiltered, aged in used barriques. This purist approach respects the grape variety in its complete honesty.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The vibrant acidity makes it an ideal food companion: duck breast fillet with cherry sauce, braised rabbit with plums, beef pot roast, game terrine or aged mountain cheese. Also an excellent choice with mushroom dishes and hearty stews.
- Special Characteristics
- An uncompromisingly honest Sankt Laurent without oenological tricks: no deacidification, no tannin additions, no juice run-off. Forgeurac demonstrates what this often underestimated grape variety can achieve when left to its own devices. A terroir wine with soul and character – and with just 85 Oechsle, it proves that greatness does not come from alcohol.
