Wine Description for El Morredero 2021 by Sangarida

Colour & Appearance
Transparent cherry red with youthful luminosity – a wine that reveals its cool-climate origins in the glass.
Nose
Fragrant and varietal: cherry and violet dominate the bouquet, accompanied by a fascinating smoky-mineral note and a subtle meaty nuance that adds complexity. An aromatic profile that places elegance before power.
Palate
Here the new style of Bierzo reveals itself in its purest form: lean, juicy and remarkably elegant. The tannins are silky-fine, the texture almost Burgundian. At just 12.5 per cent alcohol, impressive expressiveness unfolds, carried by a vibrant acidity that gives the wine tension and excellent drinkability.
Finish
Invigorating and fresh, with the distinctive acidity as its backbone – a finish that invites the next sip rather than tiring the palate.
Terroir & Origin
The vines grow at 600 metres altitude on clay soils in the D.O. Bierzo. The Atlantic-continental climate fundamentally shapes this wine’s character – cool, fresh, with a minerality that recalls the proximity to the Atlantic.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Mencía, Bierzo’s principal grape variety, in its most refined interpretation. Destemmed grapes, spontaneous fermentation, twelve months‘ ageing in used oak barrels (225 and 500 litres) – artisanally precise, without over-extraction. A single-parcel wine with under 1,000 bottles produced by the Sangarida project, founded by the Galician estate Attis.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with the regional speciality Cecina de Vaca (air-dried beef from Bierzo). Equally harmonious with Mediterranean pasta salad with sun-dried tomatoes or other vegetarian dishes with a Mediterranean character.
Special Features
This wine embodies the opposite of the stereotypical heavy Spanish red. The cool 2021 vintage has produced a Mencía that recalls Pinot Noir or light Loire wines – Atlantic, fresh, with a profile that places drinking pleasure above concentration. A statement for the new generation of Spanish red wines.
