Notes
From heavily weathered granite soils, spontaneously fermented and aged in terracotta amphorae as well as concrete – entirely without any influence of wood; the domaine has been Demeter-certified since 2002.

Colour & appearance
Intense violet, dense and youthfully radiant in the glass – a wine that announces its freshness visually from the very first glance.
Nose
A deep, clear bouquet: violets and blackberries, accompanied by blueberries, cassis and red cherries. An idiosyncratic, captivating note of salmiak pastilles and liquorice joins in, underpinned by a fine hint of tar. Fragrant, precise, inviting.
Palate
Juicy and linear, with fine, supple tannins and a clear, supporting acidity. The mineral notes give contour to the dark fruit core. Only 12.0% alcohol – this Syrah dances lightly on its feet without sacrificing any substance.
Finish
Pronounced and long, the dark berries and the saline pull of the granite minerality linger distinctly on the palate. Pleasantly uncomplicated, yet with genuine depth and complexity.
Terroir & origin
The vines are rooted in heavily weathered granite with portions of clay and silt in Saint-Joseph in the northern Rhône. Matthieu Barret – a seventh-generation winemaker who returned home to Cornas, where his grandfather once sold grapes to Chapoutier and Delas – applies the same standards here as on his own steep granite terraces: farmed biodynamically (Demeter-certified since 2002), with mules instead of tractors in the vineyard.
Grape variety & vinification
Pure Syrah, fully destemmed and spontaneously fermented. Two weeks of fermentation with gentle extraction: initially pumping over, then punching down the cap once a day. Ageing takes place in terracotta jars and concrete tanks – entirely in keeping with Barret’s philosophy, which has completely banished barriques from his cellar since 2017. Only a minimal addition of sulphur at bottling.
Food recommendations
An everyday wine with ambition: alongside grilled lamb chops, herb-crusted duck breast, lentil stew with sausage or simply with hard mountain cheese and dark bread. A delight when served slightly chilled.

The D86 is proof that great northern Rhône Syrah needs no new wood: terracotta and concrete allow the fruit to speak unadulterated.
