Wine Description for Reiterpfad Riesling 2023 by Michael Andres

Character
Michael Andres presents with the Reiterpfad Riesling 2023 a classic Palatinate Riesling that masterfully commands the balance between freshness and substance. The moderate alcohol content of 12% and the subtle residual sweetness point to a finely off-dry to dry style that emphasises the fruitiness of the variety without losing tension. An uncomplicated, yet by no means simple wine that bears the signature of a winemaker who lets the terroir speak.
Terroir & Origin
The Palatinate, Germany’s second-largest wine region, benefits from one of the mildest and driest climates in the country. Protected by the Pfälzerwald and the Haardt, grapes ripen here under ideal conditions. The name „Reiterpfad“ presumably refers to historic paths through the vineyards – a poetic reference to the centuries-old winemaking tradition of this region. The soils of the Palatinate, often characterised by bunter sandstone, limestone and loam, lend the Rieslings their characteristic minerality and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling, the undisputed queen of German grape varieties, shows a particularly fruit-forward and accessible side in the Palatinate. The 2023 vintage brought well-balanced grapes with good acidity structure following a warm summer. Michael Andres has a gift for bringing out the varietal aromatics – from citrus fruits through stone fruits to floral notes – without over-working the wines. The restrained residual sweetness underscores the fruit and makes the wine versatile in its applications.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Riesling is an ideal companion to light to medium-weight cuisine. Perfect with pan-fried fish, seafood or Asian dishes with gentle spice. It also harmonises beautifully with regional Palatinate cuisine – such as Saumagen or Flammkuchen. The balance of fruit and freshness makes it an uncomplicated terrace wine that also brings pleasure on its own.
