Tasting Notes for Pommard “Clos des Roses” Monopole AOC 2022 1500ml Magnum by Rougeot Père & Fils

Character
A Pinot Noir of crystalline clarity and immense inner tension. Matured in the magnum format, this monopole reveals the radical philosophy of Pierre-Henri Rougeot: unadorned, purist and driven by a vibrant energy. The wine eschews loud oak notes, scoring instead with stylistic transparency, a fine-grained tannin structure and astonishing Burgundian elegance in its purest form.
Terroir & Origin
The monopole “Clos des Roses” is the pride of the estate, situated in the heart of Pommard on the Côte de Beaune. Ever since Pierre-Henri Rougeot took the reins of the domaine in 2016, vineyard management has been guided by a deep respect for the soils. The vines are cultivated organically (certified since 2020, followed by the conversion to Demeter in 2021). Through minimised tractor usage and purely manual work, the vines mirror the unadulterated essence of their terroir.
Grape Variety & Vinification
This Pinot Noir is crafted in the historic 18th-century cellar using traditional artisan methods. Rougeot relies on whole-bunch fermentation without destemming, as well as spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. Maturation in classic 228-litre Burgundian oak barrels is carried out with a very low proportion of new oak and no bâtonnage. Filtration, fining and added sulphur during aging are strictly avoided. In the magnum bottle, this uncompromisingly purist style matures particularly slowly and harmoniously.
Food Pairings
With its firm structure and savoury, mineral length, this Pommard makes an outstanding accompaniment to roasted duck breast, classic Bœuf Bourguignon or braised leg of lamb with herbs. It also demonstrates its Burgundian class when paired with aged Comté.
