Wine Description for Paso las Mañas 2020 by Artuke
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous ruby red with subtle purple reflections – a wine that visually announces its youth and freshness.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly cool and restrained, this Rioja presents itself with remarkable composure. The altitude and sparse limestone soil are reflected in a striking minerality. Barberries, pomegranate and sour cherry dominate the fruit spectrum, underpinned by crushed limestone, maquis herbs, damp earth and undergrowth. A wine that demands patience and rewards it.
- Palate
- Here Paso Las Mañas reveals its true nature: vibrant, energetic, complex. Cherry, blueberry and cassis merge with an abundance of herbs and pronounced mineral notes. The vibrant acidity and silky tannins are Artuke’s hallmarks. The wine possesses a saline, tonic quality, appearing cool and precise, yet simultaneously displaying a charming sweet fruit core. Still youthfully closed, but with extraordinary development potential.
- Finish
- Long, mineral and refreshing with lingering herbal notes and fine stoniness. The acidity keeps the wine lively and invigorating.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard Paraje El Chorro in Samaniego encompasses 3.9 hectares at 720 metres altitude – an exposed site that is already too cool for Graciano. The almost pure limestone soil and isolated location fundamentally shape the character of this premier cru wine. Established around ten years ago by Arturo and Kike, this vineyard produces one of the most distinctive Rioja wines in the region.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Tempranillo, destemmed and spontaneously fermented. Maturation took place over one year in 3,500-litre wooden vats, which gives the wine structure without dominating it with oak notes. Bottled unfiltered – purism in its purest form.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- The saline minerality and freshness harmonise perfectly with turbot a la plancha with lukewarm fennel salad, Moo-Shu Pork or ratatouille provençale. Also an excellent choice with grilled tuna or lamb with herbs.
- Special Features
- Classified as Premier Cru in the Artuke portfolio. A vineyard wine with enormous ageing potential of at least 10-15 years. The cool 2020 vintage underscores the elegance and finesse of this extraordinary terroir.
