Colour & Appearance

Radiant, deep yellow with crystal-clear, delicate highlights.

Nose

Fruit deliberately takes a back seat here. A complex fan of earthy and stony notes dominates, underscored by subtle liquorice, beeswax as well as discreet stone and pome fruit. No superficial primary fruit, but pure depth.

Palate

From the very first sip, a creamy, densely woven texture unfolds, bound by a lively, fine acidity structure and serious phenolics. With just 12.5% ABV and a dry profile (1.0 g/l residual sugar), the wine presents itself crystal-clear, juicy and with crystalline transparency. A masterpiece of poise and inner tension.

Finish

Extremely long, carried by razor-sharp mineral freshness and a fascinating, spicy density that resonates for minutes.

Terroir & Origin

Sourced from the southern part of the historic Wachau vineyard site ‘Im Weingebirge’ – the oldest documented vineyard in Europe. The old vines are rooted in a complex soil of amphibolite, loess and paragneiss. The cool, wet 2008 vintage lends the wine its taut, energetic vein.

Grape Variety & Vinification

100% Riesling. As a pioneer of biodynamism, Nikolaihof works according to strict Demeter guidelines. The wine matured for an incredible 16 years on the fine lees in large wooden casks in the historic cellar before being bottled in April 2024.

Food Pairings

A top-tier wine to accompany delicate fillet of pike-perch on root vegetables, roasted quail, braised sweetbreads or aged alpine cheese.

Key Features

16 years of maturation in large oak casks bestow legendary longevity upon this monument. Despite the extended ageing process, the Riesling appears youthfully fresh, virile and structurally at the very beginning of its long life.
