Wine Description for Vinothek Riesling Dry 2008 by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Medium golden yellow with brilliant clarity, reflecting 16 years of maturation on fine lees. In the glass, it displays a vibrant, almost youthful presence.
Nose
Restrained and complex in equal measure. Rather than opulent fruit, mineral notes, wax and liquorice dominate. Subtle hints of stone fruit and tree fruit remain in the background. The nose speaks of maturity without showing even a trace of fatigue – a wine that draws its strength from the soil, not from superficial aromatics.
Palate
Here the true class of this Riesling reveals itself. Creamy yet tightly woven, with a texture reminiscent of the finest silk. A fine, binding acidity carries the wine from the first sip through to a long finish. The phenolics lend serious structure, whilst earthy and stony notes provide impressive substance. Despite the complexity, the wine remains juicy and clear – transparency rather than opulence. With just 1.0 g/l residual sugar and moderate 12.5% alcohol, this showcases the elegance of the challenging 2008 vintage.
Finish
Long, precise, with persistent minerality and a hint of spice. The acidity carries far without ever becoming aggressive. A finale that invites contemplation.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the historic vineyard site Im Weingebirge, where Saint Severin once withdrew. The soil of amphibolite, loess and paragneiss shapes the mineral signature. Old vines from the southern part of the vineyard site provided the grapes for this extraordinary wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling that matured for 15 years on fine lees in wooden cask and was only bottled in April 2024. This extreme long-term maturation gives the wine its creamy texture and remarkable stability. The biodynamically farmed Nikolaihof once again demonstrates its feel for patient, terroir-oriented winemaking.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pan-fried char, calf sweetbreads in butter, aged Comté or asparagus with Hollandaise sauce. The wine demands dishes with substance and fine texture.
Special Characteristics
A wine that is only at the beginning of its development – despite already 16 years since the harvest. For lovers of structure over fruit, clarity over fullness. A monument to Wachau Riesling artistry.
