Tasting note
A Kabinett exactly as you would wish it: feather-light, eminently drinkable and yet precise. Caroline Diel leads Schlossgut Diel in Burg Layen in the seventh generation – and this VDP.Gutswein shows, in a highly accessible way, why the estate belongs to the absolute pinnacle of the Nahe.
- Colour & appearance
- Pale lemon yellow with green reflections and a silvery rim – cool and youthful in the glass.
- Nose
- Yellow-fruited aromatics: white peach, fully ripe apricots and quince. Beneath them lies a fine minerality reminiscent of wet pebbles, along with slightly exotic hints of lemongrass, pineapple and passion fruit.
- Palate
- Super juicy, with generous, almost chubby fruit and an expansive character. The luscious sweep of residual sweetness meets a vibrant, wide-spanning arc of acidity – classic Kabinett tension with a firm bite and a subtly grippy texture.
- Finish
- Clear, spotless, with a long echo of stone fruit and citrus.
- Terroir & origin
- Harvested in first-class Riesling vineyard sites around Burg Layen, including the Dorsheimer Goldloch – thirteen hectares of gravelly loam where wines of juicy fullness and yellow stone fruit thrive. The vineyard sites of Schlossgut Diel were documented as first-class as early as 1901.
- Grape variety & vinification
- 100 per cent Riesling, with only 8.0% vol. alcohol and around 40 g/l residual sugar alongside lively acidity – the very epitome of the light, playfully mineral Kabinett style.
- Food recommendations
- The sweet-acid tension handles piccantezza brilliantly: with green papaya salad, Thai curry or sashimi with soy sauce. It also makes a delightful match with quail breast or ripe Camembert.
- Special features
- Kabinett as a question of style: barely any alcohol, but pure surface tension – a Riesling that lets you experience the famous Diel precision even at entry level.
Drink young and well chilled.
