Wine description for Zagersdorf/Cogrštof Ried Krcsi 2011 by Moric

Character
Roland Velich belongs to those Austrian winemakers who interpret Blaufränkisch with uncompromising precision and depth. The Krcsi from the 2011 vintage represents his philosophy of site-specific vinification – a wine that combines substance with elegance and brings the cooler minerality of the limestone soil to the fore. At 13.5% alcohol, this wine demonstrates deliberate restraint, a counterpoint to international opulence.
Terroir & Origin
The Ried Krcsi lies in Zagersdorf, one of the most important Blaufränkisch terroirs on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl. The bilingual designation Zagersdorf/Cogrštof points to the Croatian history of the region. Here, limestone soils define the character – they impart a distinctive tension and mineral freshness to the wines, which clearly sets them apart from the warmer, heavier vineyard sites. The Pannonian climate with its hot summers and cool nights creates ideal conditions for physiological ripeness at moderate alcohol levels.
Grape variety & Vinification
Moric has established Blaufränkisch as Austria’s answer to great Burgundy. The grape variety typically shows on limestone firm tannins, vibrant acidity and a spectrum ranging from dark cherries through pepper spice to earthy notes. Velich works with spontaneous fermentation, extended maceration and ageing in large wooden casks – methods that promote structure and complexity without masking the fruit. The 2011 vintage is considered classic and well-balanced.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The structure and minerality of this wine call for hearty cuisine: venison loin with lingonberries, braised ox cheeks, wild boar terrine or aged mountain cheese. The wine also shows its strengths with duck with red cabbage or lamb rack with herb crust. Burgenland cuisine with paprika chicken or goulash also offers excellent pairings.
